    Flyboy 4054

    ,

AV 4054 – Flyboy Lafayette Chronograph

Often referred to as “the founding fathers of American combat aviation,” yet few Americans know their names. The 38 pilots of the Lafayette Escadrille, who flew for France beginning in 1916, before the United States entered World War I, were the very nucleus of the U.S. Army Air Service when it was formed in 1918.

In homage to the Lafayette Escadrille, Avi-8 embraces the true essence of the “Flyboy” moniker.

Young, brash, bold, reckless but heroic and deeply drawn by a sense of duty as much as adventure – it was indeed the few and the brave of the Lafayette that has given rise to the name that has become synonymous with the Avi-8 timepiece collection

  • Hawker Hunter 4052

    ,

The AV-4052 seemingly brings the instrument panel and cockpit of the Hawker Hunter to the wrist of the wearer with a homage and representation that is still utterly practical and balanced as a timepiece.

With the angled off squared shape that echoes the key pieces of the Hunters own instrumentation, the reference to the famed military jet that first flew in service for the RAF in the early 1950s, is obvious.

A sturdy yet precisely finished marine grade stainless steel case houses a Japanese retrograde split time chronograph that sits under the dial. The dial itself is a perfectly designed assembly of indentations, tension rings and carefully positioned subdial frames that continue the look and feel of this watch as a piece of military instrumentation.

Outlined hands are bold yet skeletonized to offer clarity and visibility of all subdials on the multi-layered dial that offers depth and detail for the wearer.

With piston like pushers and level upon level of Hunter inspired aesthetic touches, the AV 4052 pays suitable tribute to the famed jet without being cluttered and fussy in its carefully considered design.

Snugly strapped to the wrist with a hand stitched vintage genuine leather strap – the AV 4052 is an impressive, functional and unique aviation inspired timepiece like no other.

The 43mm diameter case is a classic vintage pilot watch shape replete with genuine scratch resistant sapphire lens and coin edged crown. Carefully hand polished on the bezel for an elegant and high-end look. With 1963 aircraft involved in the Battle of Britain, we decided to produce exactly 1963 pieces which represent each aircraf t and the fearless pilots who manned them. Running the left side of the case is an individually applied plate that is hand inscribed with each watches unique run number. Each owner of this timepiece will belong to a very select group of watch fans and collectors. Down the right side of the case is the marking RF D. The RF referring to the famed Polish 303 squadron which was the highest scoring Hurricane squadron during the Battle of Britain. The flared coin edged crown has a vintage like machined look and is topped with an engraved roundel completing the side view of the case which mimics the side view of the Hurricanes. The dial is an intriguing mix of depth and detail. The base panel captures the concentric circles outline of the RAF upon a three armed panel which lifts the 12, 4 and 8 hour indexes. A raised tension ring demarcates the minutes with the lower layer embossed with a subtle horizontal pattern indicating 5 minute intervals in vintage 1940s typography. The hour and minute hands take obvious reference from the propellers found on the Hurricane down to the contrasting blade tips painted on. The see-through exhibition caseback gives view to the workhorse reliability of the Miyota 8215, 21 jewel self-winding automatic movement that has been painstakingly customised with a cutaway rotor in the shape of a Hurricane. The Hurricane 4046 comes strapped with a beautifully supple double lined leather Nato strap and is boxed in our iconic field box style packaging alongside an extra nylon Nato for extra versatility.
